The world's greatest baritone, Matthias Gernet's latest 2017 Wagner project with Harding! Gerne and the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, led by Harding, bring us Wagner. The theme of "God and Man" and "Redemption" from Wagner's stage works is collected in a selection of scenes and orchestral pieces for baritone and bass. Gerne is truly one of the world's best baritones, fresh from his critically acclaimed performance as Wolfram in Petrenko's September 2017 production of "Tannhäuser" at the Bavarian State Opera. Harding, on the other hand, has been music director of the Orchestre de Paris since September 2016. This is the first album dedicated to Wagner, but the preludes and other pieces have often been featured in concert, and this recording is a perfect fit. The conductor's performance is as expected, as he makes the orchestra sing and resonate richly without being drowned by the various elements woven into the music. Gernet's singing is sufficient to make one realize that he is truly the world's greatest baritone.
