The Trio Vandaller was formed in 1987 and has been releasing works on the Harmonia Mundi label since 1999, all of which have been highly acclaimed. The repertoire ranges from classical to contemporary music, and the performances are overwhelmingly impressive, not only because of the high level of technical skill of each member, but also because of the three members' well-matched ensemble playing. The Brahms Trio is being released this time. This is the follow-up to the complete set of Brahms's Piano Trios, which was previously released on a 2-CD set. Brahms wrote three piano trios: the first draft of No. 1 was completed in 1854, No. 3 in 1866, and No. 1 was substantially revised by himself in 1891. Brahms usually discarded the original version when he released a revised version, but this is the only work for which Brahms himself left two versions. The two versions have been substantially rewritten, with the themes replaced and the length shortened. The first version is a bit more verbose in parts, but it also has a youthful brilliance.Trio Vandalaar's playing has a supple and naturalistic expression that is appealing, and the three musicians play beautifully, their personalities melding beautifully together. The coupling piece is the Piano Quartet No. 3 with Christoph Gauguet on viola. Although there are some difficulties characteristic of the later period, the music has reached a state of maturity, and the performance is full of deep emotion. King International
