Melnikov, who drew music from Prokofiev's piano sonatas, and whose Shostakovich's "24 Preludes and Fugues" and concertos have been divine, has taken on the challenge of playing Prokofiev's sonatas. Since this is a masterpiece in the history of Russian piano music, it will be interesting to see how Melnikov will interpret it. The Prokofiev Sonata was originally a favorite of Melnikov's admirer, Richter, and the few remaining recordings of the work are still considered definitive recordings today. Melnikov's interpretation is as dry as Richter's, but more sensitive than Richter's, and exquisitely expresses Prokofiev's volatile moods. This is truly a Prokofiev performance for the 21st century.Prokofiev composed the commonly known "War Sonatas" (Piano Sonatas Nos. 6-8) under difficult circumstances during World War II (1939-44), mainly in evacuation centers, but perhaps because of the lack of central interference, Prokofiev's original brilliance and genius shine through. At the time of Prokofiev's compositions, Melnikov's grandparents, the composers Nikolai Chamberge and Zahra Levina, were in the immediate vicinity and were present at his birth.
