The program includes one of Brahms’s finest late works, the Clarinet Sonata, as well as piano miniatures (solo). The clarinetist is Lorenzo Coppola, a member of the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra who captivated the world with his recording of Mozart’s final concerto [HMC901980 (out of print)]. The prospect of Coppola and Steier performing the Clarinet Sonata is thrilling in itself, but another highlight is the instrument. Coppola plays a Bellman & Ottensteiner model clarinet—the same model used by the genius clarinetist of the time, Mühlfeld, whose playing inspired Brahms to compose his clarinet works. It blends beautifully with the 1875 Steinway, both in terms of balance and tone. In Clarinet Sonata No. 1, an extraordinary atmosphere is established right from Steier’s opening prelude. Coppola’s clarinet playing, seemingly inspired by the lively piano in the final movement, is also breathtaking. In the Second Sonata, Coppola produces a tone so sweet and tender in the first movement’s melody that it seems almost melting. The conclusion of the fantasia-like third movement is further enhanced by the piano’s unique timbre, which heightens the piece’s distinctive atmosphere. Included between the two clarinet sonatas are Steier’s solo pieces. These works, in which the late Brahms seems to look back fondly on his own compositions—and indeed, on his life—are performed by Steier with his characteristic gentle, conversational style, making the most of the exquisite tone of his Steinway instrument as he plays them with tender care.
