Two works showcasing Poulenc’s brilliant sense of harmony take center stage. In 1949, the painter Christian Bérard passed away. He was one of the leading artists in Paris at the time, known for his work on the set designs for Cocteau’s films and plays, and was also a friend of Poulenc’s. Poulenc had planned to write a requiem upon his death, but, considering the genre too grandiose, he decided instead to compose a prayer directed toward the Virgin Mary to console his friend’s soul. The *Stabat Mater* for soprano solo and mixed chorus is characterized, above all, by its superbly written choral parts. Even in the movements featuring a soprano solo, the chorus plays a very important role. While the choral parts are substantial, the beauty of the soprano solo is exceptional, and it is a great pleasure that Carolyn Sampson—a familiar face with Bach Collegium Japan—is performing the solo. The seven antiphons of *Tenebrae* were composed in December 1959 following a commission from Bernstein (as a work for the New York Philharmonic). Originally written for boy soprano and male chorus (though it is now almost always performed by a mixed chorus; This recording also features a mixed chorus), and the work unfolds around the figure of a boy (the boy soprano)—who represents Poulenc himself—as he grapples with his fate of suffering and death. The harmonic sensibility, which evokes the vivid radiance so characteristic of Poulenc, is simply breathtaking. This is an album that allows you to savor Poulenc through the finest harmonies.
