Description:
Schumann Chamber Works with the Jerusalem String Quartet, featuring Alexander Melnikov and his new quartet! In February 2012, Alexander Melnikov, who wowed the Japanese audiences with his amazing Shostakovich concert and Beethoven Duo concert with Faust, and the Jerusalem String Quartet will perform Schumann's chamber music works on a CD. The Jerusalem String Quartet (former viola player Amihai Gross left the quartet to become principal viola player of the Berlin Philharmonic, so Ori Kamm was brought in as a new viola player). Melnikov is playing an 1875 Bösendorfer piano, which he also used in the Brahms cycle (HMC.902086). The combination of Melnikov's piano with the ensemble developed by the Jerusalem String Quartet's sharpened and limpid tone is superb. Both of the chamber pieces included here were written in 1842, during the "Year of Chamber Music," a relatively concentrated period from June of '42 to January of '43. Three string quartets were written during this period, as well as a piano quartet and a quintet. He told Clara that he was "too restricted" to express his overflowing imagination in a solo piano work. The quintet is said to have had a strong influence on Wagner. It is a powerful work that draws energy from the great works of the same genre by Beethoven, Mendelssohn, and Schubert, and puts all of his own creative energy into it. Melnikov's piano playing in the finale of the last movement of the quartet and the famous opening of the quintet is a masterpiece. The members of the Jerusalem group also caught Melnikov's detailed singing. The intimate atmosphere and pleasant tension filled this rare performance. King International
