A unique collection of orchestral arrangements of Brahms by Michael Stern & the Kansas City Symphony Orchestra, which has been making rapid progress since its establishment in 1982. With Michael Stern as Music Director, the orchestra has made remarkable strides in recent years. The orchestra performs concerts of high artistry and creative programming and is now an integral part of Kansas City's cultural life. The theme of this year's concert is Brahms. This is the first recording of the orchestral version of the Eleven Chorale Preludes for Organ, arranged in 1957/58 by Kansas City-born American composer Virgil Thomson.Also included is Chinese-American composer Bright Sheng Liang's orchestral arrangement of one of Brahms' most beautiful works, Interlude No. 2, entitled "Black Swan," and Schoenberg's arrangement of the Piano Quartet. Schoenberg's arrangement was written at the suggestion of conductor Klemperer, who was in a similar situation when he moved to Los Angeles to escape the Nazi rise to power.
