Description:

Chinese-German-Finnish trio explores "new sounds" of ancient music The trio of Chinese sho master Wu Wei, German violist Martin Stegner, and Finnish double bassist Janne Saksala has released the album "Pur ti miro" from the ECM New Series. The album includes Monteverdi's song "Suffering is so sweet" and the duet "Pur ti miro" from the opera "The Crowning of Poppea," Bach's Trio Sonatas Nos. 1 and 4, Vivaldi's Trio Sonata in D minor, and the Norwegian folk song "Bavaria The Norwegian folklore of "Bruremarsj fra Beiarn" (The Wedding March of Beiarn). Over time, our program has grown... we all come from different musical and cultural backgrounds, and it is this diversity that has been a conscious part of our performances," they say, exploring the freedom that music offers, with respect and a desire to discover new things. They are exploring the freedom that music gives us, with respect and a desire for new discoveries. Wu Wei studied the sho at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and moved to Germany as a scholarship student in 1995, and has been based in Berlin ever since. The sho is a 3,000-year-old Chinese instrument whose sound has been likened to the chirping of a phoenix in Chinese legend, which is "clear and fragile as the wind.Wu Wei plays the specially developed sho, which has a keyboard mechanism perfectly suited to Western music, and has performed with various ensembles and orchestras. Martin Stegner is a viola player who joined the Berlin Philharmonic after serving as principal viola player of the Deutsches Symphonieorchester Berlin. Janne Saksala is principal contrabassist of the Berlin Philharmonic and has been professor of contrabass at the Berlin University of the Arts since 2023. The album was recorded in October 2022 at the Teldex Studios in Berlin, and the booklet includes liner notes (in German and English) by Martin Stegner. A whole new world of sound has opened up to me. I have never heard such ancient music before. Universal Music/IMS
