An original collection of South African chamber music that combines respect for the past with an intuition for the future A Dark Flaring, the Signum Quartet's new album focusing on South African composers born in the 20th century, is now available through the ECM New Series. The Signum Quartet is an ensemble founded in 1994 in Cologne, Germany, and made its debut on the label with the 2020 album Lost Prayer by Estonian composer Erikki-Sven Tur. The works for string quartet by the six South African composers featured in this issue share the same skillful blend of reverence for the past and intuition for the future, the tackling of the darkest subjects without losing sight of the inner light, and the expression of the pain of loss and the need for comfort. Whether composing in their home country or abroad, all six composers reflect the complex and difficult history of South Africa through highly original music.A great, literal bridge connects a musical heritage that on the surface is different, with origins in everything from the South African Causa and Zulu traditions, to 20th century minimalism, early 20th century impressionism, and even back to Renaissance music as represented by John Dowland. The Signum Quartet's tone has already been described by Gramophone as "passionate and often brilliant, but at the same time clear and lean," and their sensitive approach to these diverse works is further evidence of the quartet's mastery.
