Celebrating His 90th Birthday: A Comprehensive Collection of the Outstanding Recording Legacy of a Modern-Day Legend Zubin Mehta, one of the leading conductors of our time, will turn 90 on April 29, 2026. To commemorate this milestone, a 57-CD box set compiling his recordings for Decca and Deutsche Grammophon will be released. As an exclusive Decca artist throughout the 1960s and most of the 1970s, Mehta built an exceptional recording legacy that bridges Central European tradition with American dynamism. His performances, which blend profound interpretation with passionate energy, are captured in recordings renowned for their brilliant and majestic sound. This set brings together recordings spanning approximately 50 years, from 1965 to 2013, covering a repertoire ranging from Mozart to Mahler. It also includes monumental collaborations in Israel and Vienna—Meta’s primary artistic bases—as well as in Berlin, London, Florence, and New York. Also included are the complete Schubert symphonies with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the complete Schumann symphonies with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, and two sets of Beethoven’s piano concertos (Vladimir Ashkenazy & the Vienna Philharmonic, and Radu Lupu & the Israel Philharmonic). Soloists with whom he performed include Lang Lang, Mischa Maisky, Shlomo Mintz, Luciano Pavarotti, Itzhak Perlman, Leontyne Price, Arthur Rubinstein, Joan Sutherland, and János Starker. He also performed with David Garrett and Sayaka Shoji. The collection also includes live recordings from the 1982 “Hubermann Festival” and the 1998 memorial concert for Sir Georg Solti. Notable recordings include Franz Schmidt’s incomparably beautiful Symphony No. 4, Beethoven’s colorful incidental music for *Prometheus’s Creatures*, and a refined performance of the orchestral version of Mendelssohn’s Octet by the Israel Philharmonic’s string section. It also features opera recordings of *Turandot*, *La Fanciulla del West*, *Il Trovatore*, and *La Traviata*. Mehta’s collaboration with Decca began in Vienna in 1965; his recording of Bruckner’s Symphony No. 9, made just a few days after his 26th birthday, is still regarded as a benchmark performance.
