Following the first concerto on the 2018 debut disc, this release features Shostakovich's Concerto No. 2 and Sonata This is the fourth album from popular British cellist Sheku Kanay-Mason, who created a sensation with her 2018 debut album, Inspiration, which included Shostakovich's Cello Concerto No. 1. Included are Shostakovich's Cello Concerto No. 2 with Sinfonia of London conducted by John Wilson, and Shostakovich and Britten's Cello Sonatas with Sheku's sister, pianist Isata Canay-Mason. Shostakovich composed Cello Concerto No. 2 for the celebrated cellist Mstislav Rostropovich. Rostropovich was a friend of the composer Britten, who recorded his sonata with Britten on the Decca label in 1968. Shek says he "fell in love" with the work after hearing that recording, and this recording was made at Snape Maltings, just as it was then. I have loved and studied this fascinating work for many years. The more I learn about it, the more I discover new things about it, and I will probably continue to explore it. It has some of the most beautiful and sweetest moments in music, but also some of the darkest and gloomiest.It's very powerful because it's all in one piece. 2025 will be an important year for Sheku, with the publication of her first children's book, Little Sheku, and her autobiography, The Power of Music, as well as the release of a new family album by the Canay-Mason family.
