The First Ballet Score by an Eclectic Talent in the World of Electronic Music Floating Points: MereMortals “MereMortals,” the first ballet score by Floating Points—a British artist known as one of the most adventurous producers in the electronic music scene—is set to be released by Deutsche Grammophon. Sam Shepherd, known as Floating Points, is internationally acclaimed as a composer, producer, musician, and DJ. His work is characterized by beautiful ensembles that fuse acoustic instruments with electronic music; his 2021 album Promises, which combined the jazz maestro Pharoah Sanders with the London Symphony Orchestra and his own synthesizers, is a prime example of this. While Floating Points has continued to create music that moves people and has thrilled dance floors around the world, the group has now reached a major turning point. In 2022, commissioned by Tamara Rojo, Artistic Director of the San Francisco Ballet, the group took on the new challenge of composing music for a full-length ballet. Inspired by the figure of Pandora from Greek mythology, MereMortals powerfully fuses orchestral and electronic sounds, creating music that captures—much like the story of Pandora itself—“the moment the box is opened and a new era is unleashed.” While exploring universal and philosophical questions through the contemporary theme of artificial intelligence, this ballet depicts both the potential and the dangers of humanity blazing new trails into uncharted territory. It premiered in January 2024 and was revived in 2026. “Shepard’s music constantly captivates the listener with new timbres and effects, yet these are built upon a film composer’s ear for lyricism and a sculptor’s sense of form”—San Francisco Chronicle Digisleeve format
