To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Shostakovich's death in 2025, Latvian conductor Andris Nelsons and his Boston Symphony Orchestra have completed a decade-long project to record all of Shostakovich's symphonies. The Grammy Award-winning project also includes a collection of concertos with pianist Yuja Wang, violinist Baiba Sklide, and cellist Yo-Yo Ma, as well as the opera Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk County. This release is an album of the Cello Concertos Nos. 1 and 2 by Yo-Yo Ma. Taking advantage of the outstanding acoustics of Boston's Symphony Hall, the two concertos are performed with great virtuosity. The original No. 1, written for his friend Mstislav Rostropovich, is a notoriously difficult work that became a landmark in Yo-Yo Ma's early career. The much more introspective No. 2 was the composer's 60th birthday gift to himself. Yo-Yo Ma introduced No. 2 to the Symphony Hall audience as follows.
