It imaginatively combines famous melodies by three of France's leading 19th century Romantic composers with famous chansons by three of the 20th century's leading popular music composers. The collection includes Berlioz's epic "Summer Nights," Joseph Kosma's unforgettable "Dead Leaves," and Charles Trenet's well-known "Gentle France." Accompanying her is her longtime recital partner, pianist Carrie-Ann Matheson. Some of the pieces on this program have been with me for a very long time. I worked on the different faces of the lieder and melodies, exchanged ideas with musicologist friends, and gradually quite different scenes began to emerge as I became absorbed in the recordings that had survived. The similarities between the Berlioz and Chausson song cycles were that they had been conceived and composed, in whole or in part, for tenor voices before being orchestrated and adapted for female voices, and indeed were first performed with piano accompaniment. Believing in this development, I was eager to return to the extremely intimate atmosphere that keyboard accompaniment allows.This music is full of subtle tones that appeal to the heart with their cleverness and poetic sentiment."--Banjaman Bername "In the tradition of the recital program, I wanted to end with more popular songs... Banjaman Bername was named "Artist of the Year" in 2024 at the Victoires de la Musique Classique, the most prestigious classical music festival in France. Banjaman Bername will give a solo performance at the closing ceremony of the Paris Olympics on August 11, 2024, singing "The Hymn of Apollo," arranged by Gabriel Fauré.
