A French Tenor Who Bridges Two Opera Powerhouses and Shines Brightly French star tenor Benjamin Bernheim is exploring the works of Italian opera composers in his native France. *Le Monde* praised him for his “rich voice, passionate sensibility, and poetic musicality.” He combines well-known and lesser-known operas by Donizetti and Verdi with the captivating early music of Spontini and Cherubini, as well as two popular Puccini arias and an aria from Mascagni’s overlooked opera *Amica*—all sung in French. Alongside Frédéric Chaslin and the Bologna Municipal Opera Orchestra, Bernheim shines brilliantly between these two great opera nations. From the 19th to the 20th century, Paris was the center of European opera. From Cherubini to Mascagni, Italian composers in particular were drawn to this city with its international outlook and opera-loving audience. As a result, the French and Italian operatic traditions engaged in a stimulating and fruitful exchange, and Italian composers demonstrated their creativity in crafting new melodies through music that made full use of the sounds of the French language.
