The Latest Album from One of Today’s Most Promising Composers and Artists British composer and artist Peter Gregson is one of today’s most promising figures in the field. *Patina* is his new album, following his debut recording for DG in 2018. His fifth studio album, *Patina*, is his most personal work to date. The idea of “presence through absence” is central to the composition of every track on *Patina*. Once he begins writing a piece, Gregson takes his time removing the main melody to observe how the harmonies, basslines, and textures rearrange themselves in the resulting gaps. —Just as a stain remains where a coffee cup once sat on a table, or as a glacier reshapes the Earth’s surface long after it has vanished.— “This is a collection of works where the sounds have matured and the music is alive.” He describes the role of the cello as follows: “I like the idea of treating the cello like a human voice. When singing a modern ‘song without words,’ I wanted the sound to be not like that of a cello in a concert hall, but rather like the sound resonating right next to my ear as I play.” To express the intimacy Gregson was seeking, he used valve reverb, spring reverb, plate reverb, analog delay, a harmonizer, a vocoder, and ’80s-style digital reverb—and this is largely why *Patina* doesn’t sound like a typical classical music release. Gregson, who began playing the cello at age four, still uses it as his primary instrument for composition. He is prolific and boasts a truly impressive resume, having achieved success in film, video games, ballet, and the music for mega-hit series such as *Bridgerton*. He has also contributed to numerous recordings, ranging from Hans Zimmer to Ed Sheeran and the BBC hit drama *Sherlock*, and has been praised by *The New Yorker* as being “at the forefront of the new music scene.” Although the cover art itself does not feature any text, the CD and LP versions include stickers bearing the album title and artist name.
