Description:
100th anniversary of his birth. First collection of Beethoven recorded by Marriner with his handpicked ASMF To commemorate the 100th anniversary of British conductor Sir Neville Marriner's birth on April 15, 2024, the Beethoven recordings he made with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, which he founded, are being brought together for the first time in a 10-CD box set. Limited edition. Limited edition. Marriner has produced an extensive discography for most Decca labels (Ouazoril, Decca, Argo, Philips Classics). Although best known for his recordings of Baroque music and Mozart, Marriner was also highly regarded for these Beethoven recordings: in September 1970, he recorded Beethoven's first two symphonies (Nos. 1 and 2) for Philips and released them on a 4 LP set ("The Rise of the Symphony"). The other symphony, No. 4, was recorded in December 1974, along with the string orchestra version of the "Grand Fugue".Later in the 1980s, recordings of Beethoven's symphonies began in earnest, beginning with Heroes in 1982 and concluding with the Ninth in April 1989. The Violin Concerto is also included in two recordings, one made for Argo with violinist Iona Brown, who was also the leader and conductor of the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, and one for Philips with Gidon Kremer. Kremer's performance includes two of Schnittke's cadenzas. These recordings conclude with the charming Minuet, German Dances, and Contredans, also made for Philips in 1978. In original jacket. The playing is bright and refined, the phrasing is fine, and the balance is perfect" - Gramophone (on the Minuet, German Dances, and Contredans) (UNIVERSAL MUSIC/IMS) Scheduled to be recorded Beethoven: [CD 1 [CD 1] 1-4) Symphony No.1 in C major, Op.21, 5-8) Symphony No.2 in D major, Op.36 Recorded in September 1970/.
