Complete Recordings On Decca & Philips

Description:

The 5th Anniversary of His Passing. The Second Volume of the Complete Recordings by the Renowned Dutch Conductor! A 31-CD Box Set Focusing on His London Years. In 2026, it will be five years since the passing of the renowned Dutch conductor Bernard Haitink. While widely known for his relationship with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, he was also deeply familiar with London, serving as Chief Conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra from 1967 to 1979 and appearing at prestigious British opera houses such as Covent Garden and Glyndebourne. This 31-CD box set focuses on Haitink's activities in London. Following the first installment centered on recordings with the Concertgebouw Orchestra, this set contains recordings made in London spanning approximately 20 years, from Dvořák with Maurice Gendron in 1967 to Rachmaninoff with Vladimir Ashkenazy in 1986. Many characteristics evident in his recordings with the Concertgebouw Orchestra are also present in these recordings with the London Philharmonic.Gramophone magazine aptly described his dignified restraint in letting the score speak for itself: "There is never a moment when one feels a performance is taking place. It simply is." A member of the London Philharmonic remarked, "Playing with Haitink felt like performing chamber music. When he became inspired, everything was elevated several levels; in more introspective music, he seemed to transport himself to another, heavenly world." Haitink's structural perfection and clarity of texture are demonstrated in numerous recordings, including the first complete Beethoven symphony set released together and Stravinsky's three major ballet scores. His complete Liszt symphonic poems are also significant recordings, benefiting from intensity and propulsive force. Similarly, his recordings of Shostakovich's symphonies with the London Philharmonic focused on expansiveness rather than audience appeal, constructed with an even more relentless momentum, as in the Tenth. Supported by superb recordings by Philips and Decca engineers, Haitink's approach prioritized above all the transparency of texture, the perfection of the melodic line, and a sense of destiny. There is no excessive ornamentation whatsoever; instead, there is profound musical logic and devotion.
