Joan Sutherland (1926-2010) was discovered as a bel canto soprano by her future husband, conductor Richard Bonning, and after her performance of the title role in "Lucia di Lammermoor" at Covent Garden on that historic night in February 1959, offers for performances and recordings poured in.
