The Beautiful Melody of the Cello, Discovered Beyond Genres “Song” is an album conceived by British cellist Shek Kané-Mason around the theme of “song,” transcending genre boundaries. From simple folk songs to classical works by Beethoven, Mendelssohn, and Stravinsky, jazz standards, and original pop songs composed by Shek himself, the album highlights the cello’s beautiful singing voice. Shek’s versatile cello tone, which masterfully navigates a wide range of styles, speaks to the fact that he is a musician who draws inspiration from various genres. On this album, Shek not only performs solo but also collaborates with family and friends, showcasing his talents as a composer and arranger. On “Cry Me a River”—famous for Ella Fitzgerald’s recording—he performs an improvised duet with his friend, jazz pianist Harry Baker. The album also features the original pop song “Same Boat,” co-written with his close friend, singer-songwriter Zack Able. Among the tracks, Shek’s personal favorite is the Welsh folk song “Myfanwy,” which he arranged for three cellos. Shak commented on this song, saying, “Since I spent most of my childhood living with my grandmother in Wales, this is a song full of memories that I’ve known for as long as I can remember.” Universal Music/IMS
