A 3-CD box set commemorating 55 years of artistic achievement by the world’s premier sister piano duo, featuring new recordings To celebrate the 55th anniversary of the sister piano duo Katia & Marielle Labèque’s first recording, a 3-CD box set titled “55” has been released, chronicling their artistic journey. It brings together new recordings alongside carefully selected archival recordings from over half a century of their career. Their debut album, released in 1970 under the artistic guidance of Olivier Messiaen, marked the beginning of one of the most distinctive careers in the world of contemporary music. “‘Fantaisie sur un Amen’ was truly our very first recording. We were 17 and 19 years old, and Olivier Messiaen himself asked us to record it,” they recall. This set includes 25 new recordings (recorded in 2025, including world premiere recordings) and 30 historical recordings (from 1970 to 2024), painting an intimate portrait of two artists who have consistently crossed genre boundaries between classical, contemporary, minimalist, and popular traditions. ‘55’ places a special focus on female composers, with 12 of the 55 tracks written by eight different women. Katia and Marielle say of these composers: “It was only the passage of time that made them seem silent. Their stories—their extraordinary journeys and courageous destinies—resonate deeply even today.” "55" is a work of art not only in its music but also in its visual and editorial presentation. The box set includes photographs by French photographer Brigitte Lancom, tracing the artistic lives and friendship of the two women over more than 40 years, along with a comprehensive booklet featuring an essay by musicologist and journalist Renaud Machard, historical context, and the composers’ own words. The three CDs each have their own titles and unfold as distinct yet interconnected worlds. CD1 [Wild is the Wind]: A dialogue between the styles of popular and classical music, focusing on the free movement between genres. CD2 [Of a Bright Garden]: A program spanning the repertoire from the Romantic era to the 20th century, centered on the themes of gardens and childhood.
