David Atherton, Antony Pei(CD 2 only)(Conductor) British conductor David Atherton turned 80 in January 2024. The iconic recordings he made with the London Sinfonietta will be released under the title "Vienna - From Mozart to Schoenberg". 13 CD box set. Limited edition. At the heart of this set is the pioneering Schoenberg music recorded on five LPs in 1973-74. With the London Sinfonietta, known around the world as one of the most innovative orchestras, old Vienna meets new Vienna in Atherton's musical journey from Mozart to Schoenberg, then Berg, Weill, Robert Gerard, and Ligeti. Atherton founded the London Sinfonietta in 1968 and served as its music director until 1973. In an interview in the commentary accompanying the set, he says that the orchestra was formed around a unique composition for Schoenberg's Chamber Symphony No. 1. The orchestra has since developed a passion for modern music and contemporary composers, and revolutionized the London concert scene in the 1970s. The orchestra's musicality was equally keen on Mozart's wind serenades and Schubert's religious music. Also included is a three-LP set of Kurt Weill's works recorded for Deutsche Grammophon in 1975 and a collection of Ligeti's works recorded for Decca, with Aurel Nicolet and Heinz Holliger as soloists.Includes many recordings that are being released on CD for the first time. In original jacket. The musicians [of the Sinfonietta] are English musicians nurtured in the great tradition, and this combination is perfect for Schoenberg. In short, they play this music with the same care, general flow, and attention to detail as they did with Beethoven and Brahms. The playing is, as one would expect, very good, well prepared, loving, and with a dense attention to detail. (UNIVERSAL MUSIC/IMS)
