Limited edition.Brahms, Schumann, Tchaikovsky, Wieniawski, Saint-Saens (No. 3), Mozart (Nos. 3 and 5), Barber, Walton's concertos, Lalo's "Spanish Symphony," and concerto works by French composers, plus Jean-Yves Thibaudet and Olli Mustonen, The CD includes chamber works with Steven Isserlis, as well as two encore CDs. Joshua Bell began playing the violin at the age of four, but signed with Decca at the age of 19, less than a decade after he began working seriously on the instrument. With the musical and technical gifts nurtured by Eugène Ysaÿe's student Josef Gingold, Bell produced three albums of concertos and recital encores by Bruch, Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky, and Wieniawski soon after his contract. Bell's particular attraction to Wieniawski was an indication of his affinity for the older style of violin playing embodied by Gingold, Heifetz, and Kreisler.By then, however, Bell had already expanded his own musicality, forging partnerships with Thibaudet, Mustonen, and Isserlis and producing albums of highly prized French repertoire, including Chausson's Concerto and Messiaen's Quartet for the End of the World. Aaron Jay Kernis' Air for violin, a work composed for Bell and recorded on the Argo label and previously available only in the United States, is included in this box. Bell is currently the music director of the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields. Original jacket design. Booklet features new liner notes by Tully Potter. If Bell can play so well at 21, how will he play 40 years from now?"--Gramophone magazine (1988) Rich tone, impeccable technique, astonishing articulation...breathtaking violin playing."-"Gramophone" (1988) (on the Bruch and Mendelssohn concertos) (UNIVERSAL MUSIC/IMS)
