Description:

A 16-CD box set compiling the popular series that transports listeners to the glamorous world of Hollywood For the first time, the popular album series produced by John Maurer and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra for Philips—which transports listeners to the glamorous world of Hollywood—is being released in its entirety. A 16-CD box set. Limited edition. In the 1990s, under Maucelli’s baton, the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra breathed new life into the orchestra’s pop repertoire, began telling new stories, and attracted new audiences. Centered on all the original Hollywood Bowl Orchestra albums released by Philips between 1991 and 1996, this box set features a diverse repertoire ranging from Gershwin to Ligeti, and from Stravinsky’s *The Firebird* to the film *Edward Scissorhands*. The series, which began with the album *Hollywood Dreams*, was hailed in the September 1991 issue of *Gramophone* as “a sophisticated performance with perfect character… we want more.” Also included are two albums Maucelli recorded for Decca: *My Fair Lady* (Kiri Te Kanawa, Jeremy Irons) and *Schoenberg in Hollywood*. The set comes with a booklet featuring an essay by Peter Quantrill and insightful commentary by Costa Piravacchi, who produced many of these recordings for Philips. Presented in the original jacket. John Maucelli was born in New York. He made his professional debut as a conductor in 1973 and honed his skills as Bernstein’s assistant at the Metropolitan Opera. He served as Music Director of the Kennedy Center from 1982 and as Music Director of the Scottish National Opera from 1987, among other positions. In 1990, he became the conductor of the newly formed Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. He is highly regarded not only in classical music but also in the fields of musicals and pop. Universal Music/IMS
