Description:
The definitive collection of the deepest and most extensive recorded legacy of Germany's greatest conductors 15 CD box set The 15-CD box set of recordings by the famous German conductor Horst Stein for Decca is now available. The astonishingly wide repertoire ranges from the complete Beethoven concertos with Friedrich Gulda, described by Gramophone as "very lively and extremely lyrical," to the music of Cherubini and Weber, to acclaimed recordings of Bruckner, Wagner, and Wolff. The collection includes the complete Beethoven concertos with Kelvini and Weber.Four of the most colorful Sibelius discs were described by High Fidelity magazine as "consistent, freely conceived interpretations that make great strides...the sound is at once aggressive and smooth." These recordings clearly convey the unpretentious leadership of his many appearances at Bayreuth and the Vienna State Opera. After the war, Stein honed his skills as an opera conductor at Bayreuth, where he worked as an assistant to Karajan, Kahlberg, and Knappertsbusch on the famous productions of "The Ring of the Nibelung" and "Parsifal. And later, in his own Wagner conducting, he became known for his masterful pacing and dramatic pulse, and this set includes a collection of his orchestral highlights with the Vienna Philharmonic. Throughout his career, Stein was active at Bayreuth and in Vienna, and in his later years he became a respected figure in Japan. Stein was the embodiment of the best of the German Kapellmeister tradition, producing frank, eloquent, and powerful performances of any music he undertook. When he conducts Bruckner, he is truly a genuine Bruckner conductor himself, as can be heard in his Symphonies No. 2 and No. 6 recorded in Vienna, and in his four symphonic poems and Sibelius in Symphony No. 2 recorded in Geneva, he sounds like a perfect Sibelius conductor! (see the "Sibelius Conducting" section of this site). Stein also recorded a collection of Russian opera arias with bass singer Kim Borui for Deutsche Grammophon, and in the "Death Scene" from "Boris Godunov," Stein supports Borui with a noble air.He has also been the extremely precise accompanist for Joseph Civaux in the violin concertos by Glazunov and Prokofiev and for Friedrich Gulda in Beethoven's piano concertos. Stein's conducting will resonate with many contemporary listeners for its strong rhythms and lack of egotism. This set is the definitive and most in-depth and extensive collection of his legacy of recordings. Universal Music/IMS
