This 17-CD boxed set features rare recordings of works by Hungarian composers such as Liszt, Bartók, Kodály, and Dohnányi, performed by conductors from Hungary, who were all important figures in Hungarian music, and now available in a newly remastered edition.Many of the pieces from this set, entitled Hungarian Pictures, are now available on CD for the first time. The core performers, János Ferenczik and György Lehel, were outstanding conductors with a deep understanding of their respective styles and an innate sense of the Hungarian rhythms that permeate this music. For Ferencik, conducting Bartók's music was "as natural as breathing. The album on Deutsche Grammophon, on which Kodály himself conducted his own works, is also very attractive, and it introduced the fantastic and haunting "Summer Evenings" to many listeners in the West.The last disc contains highlights from the Liszt-Bartók Piano Competition held in Budapest in 1961. It includes a powerful and expressive performance of Liszt's piano sonata by the winner, Gabor Gabosz, as well as performances by the young Dino Ciani, Valentin Belchenko, and David Wilde. This set is lined with rare recordings that collectors will not want to miss. The booklet includes an essay by Peter Quantrill detailing the biographies of János Ferencik and György Lehel.They did not flee the country when the Hungarian uprising of 1956 was harshly suppressed by the communist regime, and thus became an important part of Budapest's postwar musical culture, with Ferencik playing a central role in the opera and Lehel in the radio and television stations.
