Pilar Laurenger, Arlene Oger(6)(soprano), Vienna State Opera Orchestra [Recorded] November & December 1970,Vienna Performers Walter Weller, conductor The Decca recordings of the Viennese-born British violinist and conductor Walter Weller (1939-2015) are now available in a 20-CD box set. Limited edition. As the youngest concertmaster of the Vienna Philharmonic, Weller switched from violin bow to conducting stick in the late 1960s and quickly developed a natural and successful relationship with national and international orchestras. After becoming the permanent conductor of the Vienna State Opera, Weller recorded an aria recital with the Spanish soprano Pilar Laurenger in 1970, which also marked his studio conducting debut. The Weller Quartet, of which he had been a leader, disbanded to concentrate on conducting. With the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, the London Philharmonic, and the London Symphony Orchestra, Weller applied his intimate knowledge of orchestral technique to mainly Russian symphonic works throughout the 1970s. Weller's knowledge of these orchestras is evident in his complete symphony recordings, where strong conducting and Viennese warmth coexist. He was widely recognized by critics for his complete grasp of complex scores and his ability to coax a rich, transparent sound from the orchestra. The set includes Shostakovich's Symphonies Nos. 1 and 9 recorded in 1971, the complete symphonies of Rachmaninoff and Prokofiev that followed, the Dukas symphonies of 1974, the complete Bartók piano concertos recorded with Pascal Roger in 1974-76, the Israel In 1979-82 Weller returned to the repertoire he grew up with as the son of a violinist with the Vienna Philharmonic. These included Brahms' Hungarian Dances and a collection of Mozart violin concertos with Japanese violinist Mayumi Fujikawa. It is also notable for the inclusion of two concertos that were published after Mozart's death and later declared to be forgeries, both of which are very attractive works in their own right. The booklet includes a new essay by Peter Quantrill on the life and career of Walter Weller, celebrating this true Viennese musician. In original jacket. (UNIVERSAL MUSIC/IMS)
