Three Cynical and Timely Stories from 20th-Century Classical Music This album features three cynical and timely stories from 20th-century classical music by Gérard, Walton, and Stravinsky. All are Decca and Argo recordings that have been out of print for a long time, dating back to the 1970s. *The Plague* is a musical drama composed by Robert Gérard after he was inspired by Albert Camus’s 1947 novel *The Plague*; it centers on the catastrophe of the plague that suddenly swept through a city in French Algeria. This recording, the first made for Argo, is conducted with remarkable empathy by the Hungarian-born conductor Antal Dorati, who became a friend of the composer. Walton’s *Façade*, recorded in 1972 and also released by Argo, holds a unique place as the composer’s only stereo recording of the score. The narrators are Peggy Ashcroft and Paul Scofield. The 1975 recording of *The Soldier’s Tale* features Glenda Jackson—winner of the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in the film *The Women*—as narrator. Universal Music/IMS
