The First Complete Recording of the Mozart 222nd Birthday Concert The first-ever CD release of a gala concert featuring outstanding Mozart interpreters from the late analog era. On January 27, 1978—Mozart’s 222nd birthday—this celebratory event took place at the Palais de la Musique et des Congrès in Strasbourg, featuring an original program focused on the decade of Mozart’s artistic maturity. Everyone who participated in this concert must have taken pride in proving themselves to be true Mozart aficionados. The two concert arias are sung by soprano Jessye Norman. At the height of her illustrious career, Norman took on Mozart’s soprano roles, which had been met with acclaim at the Royal Opera. The accompanist for the aria from K. 505 was Alfred Brendel, a pianist with a well-established reputation for his Mozart interpretations. The Piano Concerto K. 503, composed in 1786 and performed in the second half of this concert, embodies the profound and exquisite humor of *The Marriage of Figaro*, which had premiered just shortly before. The overture to *Idomeneo* and Symphony No. 40 are performed by the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, the ensemble that—at least in the United Kingdom—captivates record collectors’ hearts more than any other when it comes to Mozart’s music. Founder Neville Marriner conducts with a keen sense of expressive form. While a CD featuring excerpts from this concert was previously released, this is the first time the entire concert has been released in its entirety. This release has been newly remastered by Eloquence. It is an album that no Mozart lover should miss.
