A Young Quartet’s New Approach to Nordic Folk Music Founded in 2002 and recognized as one of the most exciting young string quartets as of 2017, the Danish String Quartet brings fresh perspectives to both contemporary music and the core classical repertoire, highlighting their essence. At the same time, they are engaging with the world of Nordic folk music in a remarkably brilliant way. Their 2014 album *WoodWorks* (Dacapo Records) was a hit in the left-field scene and has captivated audiences worldwide in concert performances. Now, the Danish String Quartet has chosen their folk music project for a new recording with ECM. “Now Found Is the Fairest of Roses” is taken from a hymn published in 1732 by the Danish theologian and poet H.A. Blorason. This hymn features a mysterious and sombre melody. To accompany his own Christmas hymn, Bløason selected an old Lutheran funeral chorale. It elegantly illustrates the constant connection between life and death. They explain: “We set out on a journey through the melodies of Nordic folk music, ultimately arriving at Bløason. It may be a journey with many rugged paths, but we believe we will return with some wonderful memories. In these old melodies, we find boundless beauty and depth, and we cannot help but sing them through the medium of our quartet. Blåson found the most beautiful rose, and we encountered wonderful songs. We sincerely hope you will enjoy what we have done with these songs.” Universal Music/IMS
