A Vivid Yet Elusive, Mysterious World Anna Goulari was born in 1972 in Kazan, the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan in the Russian Federation. Although she was known among a small group of passionate fans for her performances of Scriabin and Chopin, what catapulted her to fame was her performance of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in the film *The Invincible Man Chosen by God*, directed by Werner Herzog, and captivated audiences with her presence and commanding performance. Since then, new recordings of hers have been released from time to time; each time, she would garner attention only to fade from the spotlight again, but with her debut on ECM, her fan base is likely to grow exponentially. For this album, she has selected works by Prokofiev, Metner, and Chopin—pieces that are, in a sense, very “pianistic.” Yet her performance remains highly distinctive; she begins by drawing the listener into the vivid, elusive world of Prokofiev’s “Fleeting Illusions.” Even in Metner’s evocative “Fairy Tale,” a unique narrative unfolds that goes beyond a mere fairy tale. Chopin’s Piano Sonata No. 3 exudes a powerful energy reminiscent of a Beethoven sonata, yet at the same time creates a truly intimate atmosphere. Universal Music/IMS
