A Monologue Told Through the Piano—My First Piano Solo Album! Conductor Myung-whun Chung, who has also enjoyed a successful career as a pianist since winning second place in the piano category at the 1974 Tchaikovsky Competition. He also treated us to a wonderful piano performance as a collaborator during Bartoli’s visit to Japan in 2006. Surprisingly, he had never released a solo piano album until now, making this his first solo release. “The piano remains my closest and most beloved musical friend,” says the maestro. The idea for this album began with the suggestion, “Why not make an album for your two granddaughters?” and it includes pieces that have marked important milestones in his life. Debussy’s “Clair de Lune” was recorded for his granddaughter, whose name means “moon”; Schubert’s Impromptu in G major was recorded with the emotions he felt when performing it at his eldest son’s wedding; and “Autumn Song,” which he performed at the Tchaikovsky Competition, was recorded as he recalled the audience’s enthusiastic response during that competition. He also dedicates Chopin’s Nocturne in C-sharp minor to his older sister, the violinist Chung Kyung-wha, who had the greatest influence on his music. As this album was recorded with his granddaughter in mind, it features a collection of short pieces with familiar melodies that everyone has heard at least once, and his exquisite touch vividly creates a moment of pure bliss. This album, Chung Myung-whun’s first solo piano album, is also the first collection of piano masterpieces for the ECM label. Given that the label has traditionally focused on avant-garde music, this release may come as something of a surprise to fans. Although it is a collection of piano classics, it was produced, as always, by Manfred Eicher, and the label’s renowned recording quality remains intact.
