An avant-garde and grandiose sound with a progressive rock feel A collection of works by Erikki-Sven Toor, one of Estonia’s leading composers. After studying flute and percussion at the Tallinn Music School, he studied composition under Jaan Rätse at the Tallinn Music Academy. It is also worth noting that during this same period, he led a rock group that went on to become one of Estonia’s most popular bands. Eventually, he devoted himself entirely to composition and produced numerous works. While retaining the atmosphere of the progressive rock he was drawn to in his youth, his music—which possesses a distinctly avant-garde sound—has gained widespread popularity around the world, and Paavo Järvi, who conducts here, is known to be one of those captivated by its charm. While he even made use of electric guitar in his Symphony No. 5, his Symphony No. 7—as indicated by its subtitle, “Dedicated to the 14th Dalai Lama”—is a solemn work featuring a choir. This much-discussed piece offers a glimpse into Tour’s diverse compositional style.
