Max Richter’s latest project is a beautiful collaboration between sleep and sound! With his latest work, *Sleep*, Richter has made history. He performed the longest single piece of music ever recorded and created music that listeners can hear—and experience—even as they drift off to sleep. “This is a personal lullaby dedicated to our turbulent world. It’s a declaration of ‘slow living,’ so to speak,” Richter says. While *Sleep* is a groundbreaking work in every respect, musically it carries on the framework that Richter has long upheld—that is, he continues to explore the question of what the language of classical music should be. Like his previous works—though not all of them—“Sleep” centers on piano, strings, keyboards, electronics, and vocals, crossing the blurred boundaries between various musical genres. Those expecting music with a hypnotic effect will be instantly soothed, yet the reality is entirely different. The 8-hour version of *Sleep*, to be released separately as a digital release, is a work designed to be listened to—and experienced—from start to finish; it is intended that listeners who are awake at the beginning of the piece will fall asleep by the end. The four versions of the one-hour edition we’re introducing here comprise a work titled *From Sleep*, which can be enjoyed while awake, just like a regular record. “The two works serve different purposes. The one-hour CD and LP are meant to be ‘listened to,’ while the longer, eight-hour version could be described as a work that ‘naturally drifts into your ears’ while you sleep. “Since I wrote these songs to be listened to in the middle of the night, I hope people will actually fall asleep while listening to them,” says Richter.
