A recording from Abado’s final years. Live from the 2013 Lucerne Festival! In 2013, the Lucerne Festival celebrated its 75th anniversary, and a live video recording of the opening concert featuring Abbado and the Lucerne Festival Orchestra—released this past April by the Accentux Music label—generated significant buzz. Now, midway through that same Lucerne Festival, Bruckner’s Symphony No. 9—conducted by Abbado with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra (the live recording captured by Accentux Music)—is set to be released by Deutsche Grammophon. Bruckner’s Symphony No. 9 had also been selected by Abbado for the Lucerne Festival Orchestra’s tour of Japan scheduled for last October; however, due to health issues, the tour never took place, and he passed away a few months later. Bruckner’s Ninth Symphony was also part of the repertoire for Günter Wand’s final tour of Japan, during his 2000 Tokyo concert. While Abbado’s interpretations of Bruckner have long been described as the polar opposite of Wand’s, what kind of resonance will this commemorative release evoke in listeners? Universal Music/IMS
