ECM is releasing a live recording of András Schiff’s recital featuring an all-Schumann program, performed on May 30, 1999, at the Tonhalle in Zurich. This is a sophisticated lineup that is sure to delight true Schumann enthusiasts and lovers of piano music alike. In particular, while there is high demand for CDs featuring all eight “Novelletten” (I’m often asked about them in stores), they are hard to come by—and many of the available recordings leave something to be desired—so I have a strong feeling this will become a definitive masterpiece. In any case, given that this pianist’s previous ECM release—a collection of Janáček works—was a performance of rare excellence, expectations for this new release are sky-high.
