A 1975 recording by the jazz-rock band led by STING—still brimming with the energy of the pre-THE POLICE era—is being released on vinyl for the first time! LASTEXIT was a jazz-rock band based in Newcastle, England, best known for featuring GORDON SUMNER (better known as STING) before he formed THE POLICE. Keyboardist GERRY RICHARDSON and bassist/vocalist GORDON SUMNER formed the band after playing together in the large-scale jazz ensemble NEWCASTLE BIG BAND. Featuring drummer Ronnie Pearson and guitarist John Hedley, among others, the band performed sophisticated ensemble music influenced by modern jazz groups such as Weather Report. In 1975, they released the single “WHISPERING VOICES,” bringing a sophisticated jazz-rock sound to the local scene of the time. This is a collection of rare, previously unreleased recordings from a session recorded in 1975 at IMPULSE SOUND STUDIOS in Newcastle, England—uncovered after 50 years. This recording was made when their producer at the time, DAVID WOOD, hired them as session musicians to record a cover of the song “9TH AVENUE (PUT ON YOUR WINGS AND FLY)” by the Barbadian funk/soul band THE BROTHERS OF BARBADOS. This rare recording—featuring GORDON SUMNER and RONNIE PEARSON sharing vocal duties, with GORDON SUMNER masterfully playing bass—has been digitized from multitrack tape after half a century and revived as a vivid sonic experience. The original demo mix, “9TH AVENUE (PUT ON YOUR WINGS AND FLY) – 1975 MIX,” which perfectly captures the raw atmosphere of the time; “THE 2025 FINAL MIX,” reconstructed from the multitrack using modern technology; "2025MIXPLUSEDITEDSAXFROM1975," which meticulously edits and incorporates saxophone takes by members of the NEWCASTLEBIGBAND, and “2025MIXPLUSCOMPLETESAXESANDNOFADE,” which eliminates fade-outs to capture every last bit of the band’s improvisational jam energy right through to the very end—a total of four tracks that vividly bring to life the ambitious passion of their younger days. Their early passion, which effortlessly crosses the boundaries between jazz and rock, pierces the listener’s ears directly, accompanied by the raw texture of the recording. These are completely previously unreleased recordings—never made available via digital distribution or streaming, and with no history of leakage via bootlegs or other sources. At the initiative of the producer himself, who owns the rights to the masters recorded 50 years ago, these recordings have been released directly on physical media exclusively for dedicated fans. An extremely rare musical document left behind by STING just before his rise to global stardom. This important record, which fills a gap in history, is now presented in tangible form after half a century. Limited edition on random-color vinyl.
