A grand, experimental opera in the realm of contemporary music, centered on the concept of “Third Places,” where voice and politics intersect Composer Vasco Mendonca’s third work, *Third Places*, is an album compiling a collection of significant works featuring leading artists from the international contemporary music scene; it is conceived not merely as a compilation of recordings, but as a space for artistic and political reflection. Featuring countertenor Iestyn Davies, mezzo-soprano Barbara Kozelj, the Casada Musica Symphony Orchestra of Porto, the Het Muziek Ensemble, and conductors such as Brad Lubman and Ernest Martinez Izquierdo, the album creates a multi-layered musical world. At the core of this work lies the concept of the “third place” (a space distinct from both home and workplace) proposed by Ray Oldenburg; while symbolically incorporating actual creative spaces such as Casada Música and Amsterdam’s Muziekgebouw, the work presents music as a space for dialogue and resistance. The voice is treated as a central element and, amid the interplay of the text’s dramatic and political qualities and inner emotions, functions as a question posed to contemporary society. Furthermore, contemporary themes such as American politics, immigration issues, and social tensions in Europe are woven into the music and reconstructed as “imaginary American folk music,” creating a complex sonic space where excess and anxiety, allure and violence coexist. Material from the opera *BoschBeach* is also reconstructed, transforming populism and electoral rhetoric into musical archetypes; the work as a whole thus becomes a space where contemplation and confrontation intersect. Combining lyricism and critical insight, introspection and tension, *ThirdPlaces* stands as one of the most ambitious projects in contemporary Portuguese music, offering an experience in which music and thought are intimately intertwined.
