Experimental Sound: Piano × Dub Techno A minimalist, ethereal work woven from improvisation and repetition This work by the exploratory composer Richard Pike is a sound piece that deconstructs and reconstructs dub techno, minimalism, and classical piano. Centered on "real-time composition" using cassette-derived loops and piano, the work unfolds with an intimate, granular, and dusty texture. In early 2023, inspired by the passing of Ryuichi Sakamoto, Pike returned to the piano and shaped this work through a process of layering daily improvisations with repeated tape loops. Based on loop material collected in the studio, the process of layering melodies and harmonies on a 1950s Eavestaff mini-piano was highly intuitive, resulting in a pure recording intended for post-production editing. A serene yet experimental album where textures reminiscent of Romeo Poirier, Deepchord, and early musique concrète intersect with the nostalgia of "click and pop."
