Computer Space (1970) Among Ichiyanagi’s electronic music works created almost entirely by computer is *Music for Living Space* (1969), which simulates a human recitation. This work dates from the same period, and while complex sound design would have been impossible at the time, echoes and rapid pitch changes can be heard throughout. Furthermore, since similar phrases are repeated, it appears that several variations of short phrases were created and then processed and spliced together on analog tape. Sound Source Material for *Metastasis* (1971) This appears to be source material for the music in experimental filmmaker Toshio Matsumoto’s short film *Metastasis* (1971). Only two types of electronic sounds, totaling about 30 seconds, have been recovered; however, within the entire 10-minute work, sound (b) in particular recurs as part of a minimalist pattern. Title and Year of Production Unknown A piece in which electronic sounds—presumably modulated versions of actual bird calls—continue monotonously while undergoing slight variations. There are numerous segments lasting about one or two minutes each, which have been spliced together as appropriate on this CD. Similar sounds were also used in a piece created for the Takara Beautillion Pavilion at the 1970 Osaka World Exposition, which incorporated elements of popular music. Although other ambient music was apparently provided for a different floor of the Takara Beautillion Pavilion, Ichiyanagi stated that this work was not of that nature. For String Instruments · No. 2 + Stanzas (both 1961, performed simultaneously) Music used in Yoji Kuri’s animation *Tragedy on the G String* (1969). The original recording was made during a public performance at the Sogetsu Art Center and was included on a single that accompanied Yōji Kuri’s self-published book *The Sidelong Glance Concert*, produced in 1966—before the animation was created. This release features a reissue of that original recording. The period covered is from 1961 to 1964, when Yoko Ono was in Japan, and it is believed to have been performed by a trio consisting of Kenji Kobayashi on violin, Ichiyanagi on piano (using internal resonance technique), and Ono on vocals. Each part was electrically amplified.
