Description:
Naoko Sugime’s Recital Commemorating the 10th Anniversary of Takahiro Sonoda’s Passing! “A Note on the Recital” by Naoko Sugime It has already been 10 years since the passing of the piano master, Takahiro Sonoda… First and foremost, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to everyone who has supported me over the years—from allowing me to perform in the “Recital Commemorating the 10th Anniversary of the Passing of Pianist Takahiro Sonoda” to helping me produce this CD. Ever since I competed in the “Takahiro Sonoda Award Piano Competition” in my home prefecture of Oita, Mr. Sonoda has been my mentor, my guiding light, and my inspiration. Being able to study alongside him—a teacher who constantly pushed the boundaries of piano playing—helped me develop the mindset to always approach the piano with seriousness and sincerity. He would play alongside me, pointing out, “That’s not quite right there.” I always felt a sense of gratitude, respect, and awe toward him—seeing him, a performer on the grandest stages, play with such seriousness during lessons for a student like me, who had come from the countryside. He taught me to aim high. “Create your own style—the ‘Sugime School.’ And since I won’t be around forever, you must become independent,” he said—a memory that feels as fresh as if it were just yesterday. For the past ten years, it felt as though a gaping hole had opened up, but his wife, Haruko-sensei, carried on his legacy and provided young pianists with opportunities to hold recitals. And Mr. Sonoda’s pianism lives on. For this concert, I performed pieces that Mr. Sonoda played during his lifetime (though his repertoire spanned from Bach to the modern era and was truly vast), focusing primarily on Bach from the recordings he left behind. When you study a piece anew, you often discover different facets of it. I researched the dances of the era in the suites, the Christian themes in the Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue, Beethoven’s life in his sonatas, and the Chaconne for solo violin in the Bach-Busoni interpretation. The piano is a challenging instrument that doesn’t yield easily, but just like Professor Sonoda, I, too, love the piano dearly. And thanks to the piano, I’ve been able to form connections with many different people. I am grateful for the connection that has brought you to this CD… (Excerpt from Naoko Sugime’s booklet) Tobu Land System
