A Chilling Funeral Bell! Montu & the San Francisco Symphony’s “Fantasy” Revived with Ultra-Realistic Sound When it comes to recordings of Berlioz’s *Symphonie fantastique*, the Munch/Paris Orchestra version has long been the standard and reigned supreme for many years—but now a recording has emerged that threatens to shake that throne. Though I say “emerged,” this isn’t a new recording at all—it’s a long-existing one by Montu and the San Francisco Symphony. This performance was highly regarded from the start, but unfortunately, the poor recording quality meant its muffled sound failed to convey the true value of the performance. The poor sound quality persisted even on CD, and I had grown thoroughly fed up with the rough, flat sound. However, the sample disc recently discovered features truly astonishing sound quality—could it be said that the true value of this performance has finally been revealed? The disc is also in excellent condition, with virtually no noise caused by the disc itself. When comparing this recording to those by Minch and the Orchestre de Paris, Montu’s interpretation wins out in terms of artistic depth; provided one isn’t fixated on stereo sound, I suspect quite a few listeners would give the edge to Montu. A picture is worth a thousand words—or in this case, a single listen. In any event, please give it a listen. Additionally, the Cluytens recording I’ve included in the margin—though it has some crackling noise typical of commercially available pressings—is also reproduced with a realistic sound.
