Description:
The third installment of the series of German Society's reissued recordings from the collection, provided by Mr. N, is Hindemith. The relationship between Furtwängler and Hindemith is particularly famous for the so-called Hindemith Affair, in which Furtwängler risked his job to defend Hindemith against the Nazis. Hindemith came into the world as the standard-bearer of the new immediatism that arose after World War I, but in the end he could not become a cosmopolitan, and his adherence to the German way of musical language may have been something that resonated with Furtwängler. In fact, Furtwängler's Hindemith on this German Society disc, which was probably stereoized electrically by Electrola of Germany, is not tasteless or plain, but rather has a Germanic familiarity.In the margins of this rather long CD, we have also included Beethoven's Beethoven No. 1, which was coupled with the German Society's "Ninth", and "Don Juan" from the same Society's CD (however, these two pieces are in mono).
