In the 1960s, when Japanese experimental music was in its golden age, Kazuo Ichiyanagi—a central figure in that movement—had his tape works, which had lain dormant for 40 years at a New York publishing house, rescued and released on disc for the first time! “Funakakure,” performed to commemorate a hotel’s opening, was staged in the garden as an installation using more than a dozen stone speakers created by sculptor Mitsuaki Sora. The sharp, modulated sounds of the biwa are simply magnificent. Also included is the original tape version of “Life Music,” considered one of his masterpieces. In the 1966 version performed with an orchestra, the orchestra’s sound was modulated by a special effects device driven by this tape. Both works are expressions of a radical avant-garde spirit that would be virtually unthinkable in today’s social climate.
