For Paolo Di Sabatino, this marks his first work in about a year and a half, and his fifth piece for Sawano Kobo. The title is 'THE WAY OF TULIPS'. Comparing women to flowers is an age-old, commonplace expression, but using a flower name—specifically tulips—as a jazz title seems quite a bold idea. However, considering Italy's culture, where flowers and art are cherished like family, this is likely a natural expression of feeling. While the previous work, 'LUNA DEL SUD', featured horns prominently, returning to a trio setting requires a different mindset from any pianist. Even in the opening track bearing the title, beneath the effortlessly charming expression, one senses the complexly woven compositional technique, his innate clarity of expression, and the history of Italy, the land of song, lying majestically beneath. Those familiar with his previous works will surely agree: Sabatino's greatest strength lies in his flexibility.It is flexibility in the sense of not sticking to a certain style, and it also means being able to naturally accompany the music without unnecessarily standing out. Of course, his original compositions, but also his performances on Blue Mitchell's cheerful masterpiece "Funji Mama" and the standard "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To" show that Sabatino's first-class flexibility, which brings out the beauty of the music with a fresh approach, is shining even brighter.
