Kazuo Uehara is one of the pioneers of computer music in Japan. Following Assemblage, a compilation covering the last twenty years of his work, this release presents his earliest pieces from the analogue era. The performance heard here is the fruit of the period in the early 1970s when he moved to New York to work, and it was given at The Kitchen, still known today as a mecca of experimental art. The piece is tightly constructed as four continuous sections - dispersion, aggregation, chaos and return - but alongside the electronic sounds it draws on the sound of struck rock, the Indian shehnai, and even the voice of John Cage: unmistakably heterodox in flavour. The rough-edged collage work that only hand-made tape editing produces can be heard throughout. Reflecting both the aura of The Kitchen as a space and the atmosphere of its era, this is a fine work that stands as the point of origin for the composer. In truth, Uehara has never had much affection for his early analogue works. On this occasion the label pointed out how compelling the material was and persuaded the composer, so that the original has finally reached publication just as it was. From 1972 to 1973 I was based in New York, composing and giving concerts. Those were the golden years of experimental music in New York, and it was extraordinary good fortune to be able to work there at that moment. In 1973, as a summing-up and a memorial to those two short years of creative activity, I organised a concert entitled "EVENT '73". The venue was The Kitchen, the live space inside the Mercer Arts Center, which was then a hub of contemporary and experimental art. EVENT '73 was a live performance and can also be regarded as an acousmatic work, but it was presented with the message and concept that "this event refuses to be a concert." Of this "concert" by an unknown artist, the music critic John Rockwell wrote a favourable notice in the New York Times under the headline "UEHARA, COMPOSER, GIVES NONCONCERT". The work is built from a mixture of sounds prepared in advance in the studio and live sound in the hall. The sound materials include the voice of John Cage and concrete sounds such as rock being broken; the transformations were made with band-pass filters and a ring modulator, and the electronic sounds were synthesised on a voltage-controlled Buchla synthesiser.
