About ten years into his recording career, pianist Horace Silver produced an album that would be remembered as a timeless masterpiece, even within his own discography, which boasts numerous hard bop classics. *Song For My Father* features two tracks from the October 1963 sessions with Blue Mitchell, Junior Cook, Gene Taylor, and Roy Brooks, capturing the transformation of his quintet.
A year later, Silver returned to Val Gelder Studios with a new band featuring Carmel Jones, Joe Henderson, Teddy Smith, and Roger Humphries, recording four tracks. Among them was “Song for My Father,” which would later become one of his signature pieces. Inspired by both his Cape Verdean roots and the music he had heard on a recent trip to Brazil, this piece was dedicated to his father.
