Released in 1964 on the Verve label, this is one of arranger and composer Gil Evans’ most captivating and meticulously crafted works. It showcases some of the finest music of his career.
It masterfully blends Evans’ original compositions, such as “Las Vegas Tango” and “El Treador,” his collaboration with Miles Davis, “Flute Song/ Hotel Me," and Kurt Weill’s "Barbara’s Song," all masterfully fused through his distinctive big-band perspective. Core members including Johnny Coles, Steve Lacy, Jimmy Cleveland, Tony Studd, Bill Barber, Elvin Jones, and Paul Chambers participated in each session, bringing remarkable consistency to the texture, mood, and overall sound. Furthermore, outstanding guest musicians such as Eric Dolphy, Wayne Shorter, Phil Woods, and Kenny Burrell add new color to the carefully selected repertoire. Evans himself plays piano throughout the album, and his touch on “The Barbara Song” is particularly moving. In this track, Shorter’s expressive tenor saxophone emphasizes a deep sense of melancholy.
