Description:
This 1967 album was the last one Wes Montgomery released with Verve during his lifetime—and one of the final works of his career, preceding the three albums he released with A&M in his final years. As with many of this guitarist’s Verve recordings, on this album Montgomery moves away from traditional jazz and shifts toward pop-oriented songs, which the original liner notes described as “stiff, yet extraordinary, and everything just clicks—the ‘60s.” All tracks feature Creed Taylor’s energetic production and arrangements by Don Sebesky. On this album, Montgomery’s distinctive guitar style—which makes heavy use of octaves—blends beautifully with the rich, string-heavy orchestration and a large, diverse ensemble featuring such renowned musicians as saxophonists Ray Beckenstein and Stan Webb, pianist Herbie Hancock. Highlights include the title track—which became a Top 5 hit for The Mamas & the Papas—as well as pop instrumental songs popular at the time by Bobby Hebb (“Sunny”), Sol Lake (“More, More, Amor,” “Green Peppers,” “Winds of Barcelona”), which were popular pop instrumentals of the time.
