Recorded and released in 1958, just over a year before the death of saxophonist Lester Young, this album captures one of his final studio sessions. Although his tone had softened, Young’s phrasing remained fluid and expressive, emphasizing delicacy over power. Produced by Norman Granz, this session features trumpeters Roy Eldridge and Harry “Sweets” Edison, whose contrasting styles—passionate drive versus relaxed, bluesy restraint—create a captivating musical contrast. Backed by Hank Jones (piano), Herb Ellis (guitar), George Duvivier (bass), and Mickey Sheen (drums), this session blends small-group swing with a polished studio sound. Highlights include “They Can’t Take That Away from Me” and “Salute to Benny,” a tribute to Benny Goodman, who gave Young his first clarinet; both tracks feature rare clarinet solos by Young from his later years.
